Wedding Tips and Trends - Newlyweds Home - 22nd October 2009
Know what your style is before you head off to purchase furniture and homewares. You may be eclectic and off-the-wall, fresh and fun, classy and world wise or earthy eco-warriors. Grab some magazines and fabric swatches and set your imaginations free. Clear the lounge floor and cut out whatever grabs you. Swop and share, mix and match. Besides having a ball plotting your new home décor, the dominant look will be the style theme which best represents you as a couple.
Now you can trawl the malls and markets to find just what your dream home needs. You will save money and disappointment by keeping to simple lines and a fair balance of plain fabrics and neutral shades. Use bold colours and strong prints for accents rather than in big pieces, this makes allowance for economical revamps in the future. It is far easier to toss out a cushion whose purple paisley print has become irksome than it would be to dump an entire sofa. Similarly wallpaper should be considered with restraint and used to create a single contrasting feature wall rather than an overbearing room. Nothing is more painstaking than removing unwanted wallpaper.
Throws, loose couch covers, pashminas and decadent cushions can add the most amazing ambience to an otherwise simple living area. Small spaces also look much roomier when the bulk of the area is light in colour and neutral. Table lamps, mats and gorgeous window dressings can be effectively utilised to vamp up the character of clean simplicity.
Talking windows, these early days of wedded life are often those which afford you the most opportunity to luxuriate in late morning sleep-ins. Be wise to the effect of an early sunrise in those delightful summer months. If you have an east facing bedroom install good quality blockout blinds or heavy drapes so bright poky rays of sunshine are only permitted entry when you decide to lift the curtain on their energetic show. Heavy curtains in your bedroom are also good for your health, the body befits better from sleep in complete darkness. Then there are the additional bonuses, like privacy and sound-proofing, to be enjoyed!
